The Lifecycle of Baby Teeth

A child's primary teeth, sometimes called "baby teeth," are as important as the permanent adult teeth.

Primary teeth, which often begin to appear when children are about 6 months old, help them chew and speak. They also hold space in the jaws for permanent teeth that are developing under the gums.

The front four teeth usually erupt first, beginning as early as 6 months after birth. Most children have a full set of 20 primary teeth by the age of 3 years. The primary teeth generally begin to shed, or fall out, at about 6 years of age.

The first of the 32 permanent teeth begin to appear about the same time. Most of the permanent teeth will erupt by age 21.

We recommend that most children visit their family dentistry clinic for dental care for the first time at about 2 to 3 years of age.  Call Hall Family Dentistry for complete dental care for every member of your family!

Your child will typically start getting primary teeth, "baby teeth", at about 6 months old. Most children have a full set of 20 primary teeth by the time they are three years old. We recommend that most children visit their family dentistry for the first time at about 2-3 yrs. of age.

Have your children color the Brush Everyday Coloring Page to help prepare them for the first visit.

At our family dentistry, our pediatric dentist will explain proper brushing and flossing techniques and conduct a modified examination of their baby teeth to learn if your child may be at risk for cavities or other problems.
